Design , workshop, and exhibition for a new building of the German Embassy in Uzbekistan
Entwurf, Workshop und Ausstellung für ein neues Gebäude der Deutschen Botschaft in Usbekistan
The project started as a real-life project development for the German Embassy in Tashkent. The Federal Office for Foreign Affairs (BfAA) presents us with the location, spatial program and draft contracts. Lecturer Moritz Kölling who has a soft spot for democracy and freedom immediately recognizes the potential of the task and, together with colleagues from BfAA, we spontaneously organize an excursion to Berlin and Dessau. And so, on the days of Donald Trump’s re-election and the fall of Germany’s Ampel Coalition, we start by visiting the Foreign Office in the former Reichsbank building.
Das Projekt begann als reales Projektentwicklungsvorhaben für die deutsche Botschaft in Taschkent. Das Bundesamt für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten (BfAA) stellt uns den Standort, das Raumprogramm und Vertragsentwürfe vor. Lehrbeauftragter Moritz Kölling, der ein Faible für Demokratie und Freiheit hat, erkennt sofort das Potenzial der Aufgabe und organisiert gemeinsam mit Kollegen des BfAA spontan eine Exkursion nach Berlin und Dessau. Und so besuchen wir an den Tagen der Wiederwahl von Donald Trump und des Sturzes der deutschen Ampelkoalition zunächst das Auswärtige Amt im ehemaligen Reichsbankgebäude.
Today, the ministry’s political archive is housed in the old vault. Here we are shown historical documents with handwritten notes from the last German Kaiser about “vox populi vox rindvieh”. They are protected with clear varnish – “we don’t do that anymore” says the chief archivist and tells us about Bismarck’s difficulties with his employees in home-office. BfAA colleagues Jana Schuster, Katharina Fleck, Carsten Vellguth, Andreas Heermann and their boss Holger Seubert take a lot of time for us. They patiently answer our questions and tell us about the location, building task, identity and the life of an ambassador who – in an absolutely inadmissible abbreviation – likes to represent Germany for the Oktoberfest in Lederhosen on Bauhaus furniture.
Heute befindet sich das politische Archiv des Ministeriums im alten Tresorraum. Hier werden uns historische Dokumente mit handschriftlichen Notizen des letzten deutschen Kaisers zum Thema „vox populi vox rindvieh” gezeigt. Sie sind mit Klarlack geschützt – „das machen wir heute nicht mehr”, sagt der Chefarchivar und erzählt uns von Bismarcks Schwierigkeiten mit seinen Mitarbeitern im Homeoffice. Die BfAA-Kollegen Jana Schuster, Katharina Fleck, Carsten Vellguth, Andreas Heermann und ihr Chef Holger Seubert nehmen sich viel Zeit für uns. Sie beantworten geduldig unsere Fragen und erzählen uns über den Standort, die Bauaufgabe, die Identität und das Leben eines Botschafters, der – in einer absolut unzulässigen Verkürzung – Deutschland gerne in Lederhosen auf Bauhaus-Möbeln beim Oktoberfest repräsentiert.

The next day, we visit Dessau where the expert tour of the Bauhaus shows that the famous openness also allows for almost panoptic control from inside the executive office, and that the wonderful and serially designed Masters’ Houses have all been constructed differently for procurement regulations in the 1920s already.
Am nächsten Tag besuchen wir Dessau, wo die Expertenführung durch das Bauhaus zeigt, dass die berühmte Offenheit auch eine fast panoptische Kontrolle aus dem Inneren des Verwaltungsbüros heraus ermöglicht und dass die wunderschönen, serienmäßig entworfenen Meisterhäuser bereits in den 1920er Jahren aufgrund von Beschaffungsvorschriften alle unterschiedlich gebaut wurden.
In February 2025 our colleagues from Berlin stop by in Darmstadt and together we review the students’ presentations and diverse designs.
Im Februar 2025 kommen unsere Kollegen aus Berlin nach Darmstadt und gemeinsam begutachten wir die Präsentationen und vielfältigen Entwürfe der Studierenden.
During the fba excursion week at the end of May 2025, we travel to Uzbekistan, where we have been invited by the German Embassy. We take this opportunity for a round trip and visit spectacular sights in Samarkand and Bukhara. Together with Tashkent Institute of Architecture and Construction, we organize a joint workshop. And at the end of our stay, together with Dean Dr. Azamat Khasanov and his colleagues, we all present the results of our cooperation and the German students‘ embassy designs in a happy exhibition at the local Goethe Institute.
In der Exkursionswoche des fba ende Mai 2025 reisen wir nach Usbekistan, wo wir von der Deutschen Botschaft eingeladen wurden. Wir nutzen diese Gelegenheit für eine Rundreise und besuchen spektakuläre Sehenswürdigkeiten in Samarkand und Buchara. Gemeinsam mit dem Taschkent-Institut für Architektur und Bauwesen organisieren wir einen gemeinsamen Workshop. Und am Ende unseres Aufenthalts präsentieren wir gemeinsam mit Dekan Dr. Azamat Khasanov und seinen Kollegen die Ergebnisse unserer Zusammenarbeit und die Entwürfe der deutschen Studenten für die Botschaft in einer fröhlichen Ausstellung im örtlichen Goethe-Institut.
